Sheep Wool Baby Mattress Overlay

Natural comfort, warmth, and security for your little one

Sheep’s wool is one of the most loving, nurturing materials on Earth. Its softness, warmth, and natural rhythm create a sense of safety that feels almost like being back in the womb. Babies settle more easily on wool because it provides a stable, warm environment in winter and a breathable, cooling surface in summer. Wool naturally regulates core body temperature, helping prevent overheating while keeping your child comfortably warm.

Wool also absorbs 30–40% of its weight in moisture, capturing your baby’s natural perspiration (transepidermal water loss) during sleep and wakeful hours. This keeps the skin dry, reduces irritation, and is especially helpful for babies who sweat heavily.

Another beautiful benefit: wool holds scent. It gently captures the familiar smell of parents, offering comfort and security when your child is at daycare, with a babysitter, or visiting grandparents.

Why Choose a Sheep Wool Mattress Overlay for Babies?

1. Temperature Regulation

Wool is a natural insulator that keeps babies warm in winter and cool in summer. It helps maintain a stable core temperature essential for safe, restful sleep.

2. Breathable & Moisture‑Wicking

Wool absorbs moisture away from the skin, keeping babies dry and reducing the risk of irritation or heat rash.

3. Naturally Hypoallergenic

Wool resists dust mites and allergens, making it ideal for sensitive skin or allergy‑prone infants.

4. Comforting & Soothing

The gentle warmth and softness of wool help babies relax, settle, and sleep more deeply.

5. Familiar Scent Retention

Wool holds the scent of parents, offering emotional comfort and security when your baby is away from home.

What Is the Difference Between Sheepskin and Sheep Wool?

  • Sheepskin includes the hide with the wool still attached.

  • Sheep wool is the fibre shorn from the sheep and used to create breathable, washable wool fabric.

At Soul Comfort, we use sheep wool fabric, not hide, making our products soft, flexible, and fully machine washable.

What Is Sheep Wool Fabric?

Our wool fabric is made from:

  • Wool fibre (sheared from sheep)

  • A soft nylon grid

  • A medical‑grade acrylic stabilizer

The wool is “knitted” into the grid and stabilized to create a flat, plush surface that looks like sheepskin without the hide, making it durable, breathable, and machine washable.

General Care

  • Expect light shedding at first; this is normal.

  • Air‑fluff (no heat) for 5 minutes to remove loose fibres.

  • Keep away from high heat and direct sunlight.

  • Over time, wool fibres naturally bind together (“clumping”)   which does not affect performance; simply brush with a wire brush.

  • Brush with a metal brush after laundering if you prefer a fluffier look.

With proper care, your wool products will last many, many years.

Washing Instructions

  • Machine wash on delicate in cool/lukewarm water (up to 70°C)

  • Use wool soap with lanolin (e.g., Eucalan)

  • Air dry or tumble with NO heat

  • Remove from dryer at 85% dry

  • Spot clean with warm water (up to 70°C) and disinfecting soap

  • Do not bleach

Wool is naturally antimicrobial and does not require frequent washing. To freshen, hang outside in moist air (out of sunlight). Wool will absorb moisture and release it indoors, naturally refreshing itself.

100% Natural

Wool is a completely natural fiber, produced year-round by over 68 million sheep in Australia. These sheep thrive on a simple diet of grass, water, fresh air, and sunshine.

Biodegradable

Once wool fibers are discarded, they naturally break down in soil within a few years, gradually returning beneficial nutrients to the ground.

Naturally Breathable

Merino wool is highly breathable, with fibers that can absorb significant amounts of moisture vapor and release it into the air through evaporation.

Wrinkle Resistant

On a microscopic scale, each Merino wool fiber acts like a tiny spring, bouncing back to its original shape after being bent. This natural elasticity helps Merino garments resist wrinkling.

100% Renewable

Australian sheep grow a new fleece annually, making wool a fully renewable natural fiber.
