Medical Sheep Wool Mattress Overlays

1" Medical Wool Pile • Four Densities • Pressure Relief • Moisture Control • IPAC‑Compliant

Sheep’s Wool maintains optimal body temperature, providing gentle, consistent warmth to your muscles throughout the night. This natural fibre absorbs 30–40% of its weight in moisture and releases it into the air, preventing dampness, skin vulnerability, and bacterial growth, issues commonly caused by synthetic bedding.

Our Medical Sheep Wool Overlays redistribute pressure, reduce strain, and help prevent bed sores. They are especially beneficial for individuals with restricted mobility, those recovering from illness, or anyone who sleeps hot, cold, or experiences night sweats.

Rapid Improvement for Inflamed or At‑Risk Skin

Inflammation can lead to skin breakdown within 24–36 hours. When medical sheep’s wool is placed beneath the body, especially under the coccyx, visible improvement is often seen within 12 hours, with the area typically improving by 180 degrees.

This is why medical teams, caregivers, and palliative care practitioners trust wool as a frontline support tool.

Available Wool Densities

We offer four wool pile densities, each serving different needs:

For Non‑Health Purposes

  • 550 g- ideal if you already like your mattress

  • 700 g- for those who want more cushioning and softness

For Health Purposes

  • 850 g (1" pile)- excellent for pressure relief, moisture control, and skin protection

  • 950 g (exclusive to Soul Comfort)

    • ½" wool pile interwoven with 1" pile

    • Exceptional density for fragile skin, chronic pain, or advanced care

    • Recommended for anyone unhappy with their mattress softness

Hospital Bed Use

If ordering a double, queen, or king overlay for a hospital bed, please note this in the comment box. We will include two additional elastic straps with Velcro to prevent buckling and relieve pressure points.

All overlays include:

  • Four fitted elastic corner straps

  • Extra elastic Velcro cross‑bars on single/twin sizes

What Is Sheep Wool Fabric?

Our wool fabric is made from:

  • 100% sheep wool fibre (shorn from the sheep)

  • Knitted into a nylon grid for strength and shape retention

  • Stabilized with a medical‑grade acrylic compound for washability

Why a nylon grid?

  • Prevents fraying

  • Maintains shape better than cotton or wool alone

  • Similar to how nylon is blended into wool socks for durability

  • Renewable and sustainable

Why acrylic stabilizer?

  • Developed in Germany for high‑standard washability

  • Used safely for decades with no reported allergies

  • Allows full machine washability to 70°C

  • Ensures the body lies on pure wool fibre, not hide

This construction gives you all the benefits of wool while meeting Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC) guidelines.

Benefits of Medical Sheep Wool Overlays

Moisture Absorption

Absorbs 30–40% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet.

Bacteria Resistance

Naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial, ideal for clinical environments.

Temperature Regulation

Warm in winter, cool in summer; stabilizes core body temperature.

Pressure Relief

Distributes weight evenly, reducing pressure points and preventing ulcers.

Durability

Long‑lasting, resilient, and washable to hospital standards.

Night Sweat Support

A bonus: wool keeps menopausal women dry during night sweats.

Why Choose a Medical Wool Overlay

Medical sheep wool overlays are recognized for:

  • Enhancing patient comfort

  • Supporting healing

  • Reducing infection risk

  • Improving sleep quality

  • Preventing pressure injuries

  • Maintaining a stable microclimate

  • Offering long‑term durability

They are a valuable addition to hospitals, long‑term care homes, palliative care settings, and home‑based medical care.

Sheepskin vs. Sheep Wool Fabric

  • Sheepskin = hide + wool attached

  • Sheep wool fabric = wool fibre shorn from the sheep, knitted into a backing

  • Our products use sheep wool fabric, making them washable, breathable, and humane

General Care

  • Expect light shedding at first; normal for new wool

  • Air‑fluff in dryer (no heat) for 5 minutes to remove loose fibres

  • Keep away from high heat and direct sunlight

  • Wool may “clump” over time, this does not affect performance

  • Brush with a metal brush after washing if you prefer a fluffier look

With proper care, your wool products will last many, many years.

Washing Instructions

  • Machine wash on delicate in cool/lukewarm water (up to 70°C)

  • Use wool soap with lanolin (e.g., Eucalan)

  • Air dry recommended

  • You may tumble dry without heat to fluff

  • Remove at 85% dry, remaining moisture dissipates quickly

  • Spot clean with warm water (up to 70°C) and disinfecting soap

  • Do not bleach

Wool is naturally antimicrobial and does not require frequent laundering. To freshen, hang outside in moist air, out of direct sunlight.

100% Natural

Wool is a completely natural fiber, produced year-round by over 68 million sheep in Australia. These sheep thrive on a simple diet of grass, water, fresh air, and sunshine.

Biodegradable

Once wool fibers are discarded, they naturally break down in soil within a few years, gradually returning beneficial nutrients to the ground.

Naturally Breathable

Merino wool is highly breathable, with fibers that can absorb significant amounts of moisture vapor and release it into the air through evaporation.

Wrinkle Resistant

On a microscopic scale, each Merino wool fiber acts like a tiny spring, bouncing back to its original shape after being bent. This natural elasticity helps Merino garments resist wrinkling.

100% Renewable

Australian sheep grow a new fleece annually, making wool a fully renewable natural fiber.
